How the asylum work-permit clock counts

People who apply for asylum can ask for a work permit only after the asylum application has been pending for 150 days, and USCIS cannot approve it before day 180. Enter the day a complete asylum application is, or would be, filed.

The clock starts when USCIS has a complete application, and time you ask to delay does not count. A proposed rule would lengthen the wait to 365 days. We found no final version as of October 12, 2026.This calculator shows dates only. It does not say you qualify for asylum or that you should file.
